Rave review from a movie god

I just received film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum’s unofficial review of a film called Soap and Roses. I worked on the film while I was freelancing last year.

I say “unofficial review” because it was an e-mail from Mr. Rosenbaum to the director of the film, Rae Shaw (who now has a master’s in film – Soap and Roses was her thesis project.)

I was a set dresser on the project – especially exciting because Mr. Rosenbaum “especially liked… the overall look of the film.” Yay!

Here’s what Rosenbaum said:

Dear Rae,

I’m truly sorry that it’s taken me so long to get back to you. Cheryl Ross and I decided to watch Soap and Roses together, and it actually took us this long before we had a chance to get together and do this. (We saw it only last Saturday.)

In any case, I think it would be accurate to say that we were both impressed. Speaking for myself, I especially liked the direction of your main actors, the interesting and original choices of camera angles, the editing, and, more generally, the overall look of the film.
All in all, it shows a lot of promise, and I hope you’ve been making progress in your career since you moved to Los Angeles.

All the best (and Happy Thanksgiving),

Jonathan Rosenbaum

Soap and Roses is not viewable online, but try BET or BETJ listings for “Best Shorts” or “Short Film Showcase” – they’ve aired it multiple times (Yay, Rae!)

Crunch’d

Crunch : Clubs | Orleans

There’s a class I took here yesterday that totally kicked my butt. It was called Bosu Bootcamp. It was tough for me because I haven’t been doing any cardio in many moons. And when I did, it consisted of walking or the occasional pilates tape. So therefore, my butt was offically kicked. The Bosu is this apparatus that looks like a weird half-sphere (inflated) on a flat base. We did things like balance on the Bosu while throwing bar weights from one hand to the other, jump on and off the Bosu repeatedly, and we also ran around the room a lot. The Bosu is also used for some major ab work in this class too. It feels great to be sore. : )

This club on Orleans is right across the street from the office, so it makes it super easy to go during lunch. Point B has a corporate membership deal there, so I always see (or go with) co-workers. It gives me motivation to go, especially since I like most of my co-workers. (it’s an unusually friendly environment, for an office.) We’re planning on doing group boxing lessons twice a month or so, starting soon.

Tomorrow, the day after Thanksgiving, I’m planning on doing either a Cardio Tai Boxing class or another “feature” class that uses a new kind of dumbell (called SmartBells. Looks fun!

Buffy, how I miss thee

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Once More, with Feeling [SOUNDTRACK]

This is a great album. “Under Your Spell” is a really cute little duet with Xander & Anya. Even though it includes phrases like “his penis got diseases” and “she eats these skeezy cheeses” and “her toes are kind of hairy”

Today’s a slower day, thank goodness. Monday was a bad one (see Monday’s post). Just wanted to cry at everything. Jed got me flowers on Wednesday, just “to brighten up my day.” They’re blue irises, which are really open and pretty today. : )

Some of the other art director chicks and I are getting our hair colored together at an Oak street salon in a few Saturdays. Our new web girl, Wes, knows this great colorist guy (she’s done some web stuff for him) and it should be a fun day of hair coloring– and possibly brainstorming for a great new print campaign for him. He’s a renaissance man– he’s recently introduced a line of great teas that he wants to advertise.
I’m thinking blonder. Yeah, more fun for me.

School of Rock rocks

Oh, man. Another several months have gone by– I’m now married!

(and I’ve gotten through about all of the thank-you cards), I’m more than six months into the new job (which now certifiably rocks since we got a great creative director on board)…

and I’m crazy inspired by the movie School of Rock to get my lazy butt back on my drums again. But I’ll have to put it on hold– I don’t have the room in my apartment at the moment. Maybe if my will is strong enough I’ll get the rudiment books (and a measly drum pad) back out again.

Yep, Jack Black (AKA Jables) is going to be the next big thing. As he puts it, “I’m chubby… and sexy.” Yep indeed.

Yeah, I’m married. So?! It doesn’t mean I can’t be jealous of Laura Kightlinger.

Speaking of loving my husband very much, our wedding pictures should be getting some web exposure very soon. I have the disposable-cam pictures back, and I should be getting proofs from the “official” photographer today. I hope we didn’t tee her off too much– apparently she was upset that she missed us leaving the reception. I just had to get out of there. Wearing a corset takes away a good percentage of your willingness to stay and hang out.

Mmm! Meeting leftovers for lunch! Gotta go.
